The effects of fertilization and stable manuring were almost identical. On brown forest soil and sandy soil the effect of fertilizer exceeded that of stable manure. The joint application of fertilizer and stable manure had no advantage over fertilizer alone. There was a significant negative stable manure - fertilizer interaction. They were more effective separately than together. The N of fertilizer was more efficiently utilized than that of stable manure, in the case of P and K the degree of utilization was much the same. The ploughing in of wheat straw and maize stalks had no influence on plant development, on a chernozem soil with forest residues the soil pH was reduced, while the humus content did not change. There was a slight increase in humus content as the result of stable manuring. The yields achieved in earlier experiments were very low compared to those achieved nowadays, even on fertilized plots. This can be explained by the lower rates of fertilizer applied and the less intensive nature of the plant varieties
