Effects of water stress on vegetative growth of corn and sorghum and their recovery

Green house experiment was conducted to study the effects of water stress on corn and sorghum growth and their recovery. The experiment was arranged in completely randomized design with three replications for each treatment for corn and sorghum plant, and conducted in green house of Agronomy Department of Bogor Research Institute for Food Crops in 1982. The results showed that water stress reduced plant height, leaf area, shoot and root weight both on corn and sorghum. Shoot weight was most affected by water stress, especially on corn. Recovery of sorghum plant was slower than corn. It seems that transpiration rate and diffusive resistance were more sensitive than leaf temperature as affected by water stress. Water stress reduced transpiration rate, increased diffusive resistance of leaves and resulted in low net assimilation rate.
