Survey on aquarium plants of quarantine importance and their associated nematodes

Twenty-four aquatic plant species were collected from aquarium shops/farms and 16 species from their natural habitats. Seventeen species belonged to the emergent type; 15 species to the submerged type; three to the floating-attached type; and three were free floating. Six species collected from aquarium shops/farms-Cobomba caroliana (Vabombaceae), Elodea canadensis (Hydrocharitaceae), Myriophyllum aqauticum (Haloragaceae), Vallisneria gigantea and V. Spiralis (Hydrocharitaceae) and Alternanthera rossefolia (Amaranthaceae)-have not been previously recorded in Malaysia and are considered noxious aquatic weeds. The plant-parasitic nematode, Aphelenchoides ritzemabosi was found associated with Ceratophyllum demersum, Macroposthonia sp. with A. rossefolia, Hirschmanniella sp. with Myriophyllum spicatum and Helicotylenchus dihystera with Nymphea sp.
