The objective of this survey were (1) to describe some of the physical and chemical properties of soil in South Malang, where maize fertilizer trials were conducted, (2) to identify which soil characteristics are limiting factor for increasing yield on these soil. The method used was by digging soil profiles in the control plot of each of the fertilizer experimental sites and then described according to the soil layers. Soil samples were taken in each layer to determine some chemical properties (the analysis was done by plant and soil laboratory of MARIF Malang). The survey covered one subdistrict (Gedangan) and included 4 villages (Gedangan, Segaran, Gajahrejo, Sindorejo), and was carried out in April 1989. The results showed that the effective soil depth in the lower slopes (Gedangan, Segaran) varies between 44 to 100 cm, whereas in the middle slopes (Gajahrejo, Sindorejo) was 100 cm. Almost all sites have crumb structure and low soil strength in the first layer. The texture varies among sites and tend to be finer in the upper slopes. The soil strength tends to increase in the second layer. The mean soil strength in the first layer was 0.5 kg/cm2 and 1.8 kg/cm2 in the second layer. Soil reaction is neutral and organic matter content is low to moderate. The status of the nutrients analysed are reflected by the following data: exchangeable K is medium to high except at Gedangan and Segaran where it's low; exchangeable Na is medium to high, except of Segaran where it's low; exchangeable Mg is high; available P (Bray-1 extraction method) is low except to Gajahrejo and Sindurejo where it's medium; water extractable-S is high. These data indicated that soil are suitable for almost all food crops, and the most limiting factor is phosphor availability. So that the fertilizer research priorities for the future should be stressed on the phosphor management.
