The efficiency of advanced generation of inbreeding for the final testing of inbred lines in maize (Zea mays L.)

A set of inbred lines developed from an early maturing source population (Pool 1) were tested for their combining abilities at three different generations of inbreeding with the following objectives: to find early maturing inbred lines capable of producing superior top cross hybrids, and to study if the final testing of combining ability of inbred lines can be conducted at the fourth or fifth generation of inbreeding rather than at the sixth generation. Four out of 18 early maturing S6 inbred lines tested, produced hybrid combinations with the tester that were not significantly different from C1 hybrid in grain yield. Although they were not superior to C1 hybrid, they matured earlier than C1 hybrid. Correlation between the combining abilities of inbred lines at S5 and S4 generations, was not significant but between S6 and S5 generations was significant. Therefore, the most economical and earliest final testing of inbred lines seems to be at the fifth generation. These findings probably support the notions of Hallauer and Miranda (1981) on the controversies involving early vs late testing of inbred lines.
