Comparative plant characters and yield potential of traditional and improved varieties of upland rice

The objective of study was to compare plant characters and selection for yield and adaptability in upland rice. Twelve upland rice varieties composed of 4 newly developed promising lines, 4 recommended improved varieties, and 4 popular local varieties entered yield trials at 3 different locations, namely, Sitiung and Rambatan in West Sumatra and Taman Bogo in Lampung. Results showed that plant height, maturity period, number of productive tillers, and number filled grains per panicle are among the traits which were significantly different between traditional and improved varieties. Improvement of yield components in improved varieties lead to their better yield potential as compared to traditional varieties. All improved varieties gave higher grain yields and matured earlier than the traditional ones indicating that selection for earliness did not affect yield potential up to this point. Regression analysis indicated that yield increase on improved varieties was associated with number of grains per panicle and 1000-grain weight.
