Yield and quality of Vitis vinifera L.cv. Salti as affected by nitrogen rates and time of application [berry weight; cluster weight; TSS; TA% in berry juice]

Nitrogen - in the form of ammonium sulphate (20% N) - was applied for three consecutive years to four-year-old cordon-trained vines of the grape cv. Salti grown on P-1103 rootstock; the purpose was to determine the effect of N rate and time of application on yield and fruit quality. The N rates were 0, 100, 200, and 400 g N/vine applied one in mid-January, and 100, 200, 400 g N/vine applied in two equal applications in mid-January and late April. Fruit yield substantially increased over the control due to the application of nitrogen. Highest yield and number of clusters per vine were obtained by applying 100 g N/vine in one addition. Highest increase in average cluster weight was obtained by applying 100 g N/vine in two additions. The increase was pronounced but not significant as compared to the control. Berry weight and total soluble solids were not significantly affected by the different nitrogen rates or by the time of application. Application of 200 g N/vine in one addition resulted in the highest titratable acidity content
