In order to examine the effect of methionine hydroxy analog (MHA) on lipid metabolism in ruminants, D,L-alpha-hydroxy-gamma-mercapto butyrate-calcium was administered 20g each daily into the rumen of two female Saanen goats, weighing about 55 kg, for three weeks (Period A), and the blood concentrations of free methionine, glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), triglyceride, cholesterol esters, free cholesterol and phospholipids were determined immediately before the free methionine and NEFA increased in the blood concentration, but blood glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol esters, free cholesterol and phospholipids maintained an almost steady level throughout the experiment. The present results suggest that MHA was absorbed at least in part and mobilize NEFA from adipose tissue probably via the enhancement of choline synthesis. In addition, the reason why blood lipoprotein lipids were not effected was also discussed
