The effects of various additives on the digestibility and intakes of whole-crop barley silages by wether

Whole-crop barley at dough stage of maturity was ensiled after treating with various additives, namely, no additive, molasses feed, formic acid, lactic acid bacteria plus glucose and ammonium propionate in order to compare the chemical characteristics and feeding value of resultant silages with wether. Lactic acid contents were increased (P 0.05) and the ratio of volatile basic nitrogen to total nitrogen were decreased (P 0.05) by additives except for the effect of formic acid on lactic acid content. Dry matter contents of the silages treated with additives were larger than that of the reference silage (P 0.05). Though there was no statistical difference of silage intakes between treatments, dry matter intakes of the silages treated with molasses feed, ammonium propionate and formic acid were 17.7, 14.2 and 9.6% higher than that of the reference silage, respectively. The digestibility of feed ingredients of the treated silages were lower (P 0.05) or tended to be lower than that of the reference silage except for ammonium propionate treated silage. The feeding value of ammonium propionate treated silage was superior to those of the other silages compared. Dry matter and digestible crude protein intakes of ammonium propionate treated silage were not high enough to meet maintenance requirement of sheep, however, digestible energy intake was enough to do
