Application of farm household theories to the analysis of small scale irrigated farming systems in Ngabu ADD, Malawi
1993
Maliro, D.D.
This study has been carried out to analyze small scale irrigated farming systems in Ngabu Agricultural Development Division (Lower Shire Valley) in Malawi. It has been shown that irrigation schemes represent the arena for restoring smallholder agricultural production in the Lower Shire Valley where rainfed agricultural production on "munda" (dryland garden) is considerably more risky due to uncertainty of rainfall. Also "dimba" (wetland garden) farming that relies on food incidence and hence the level of residual moisture in the soil at the end of a rainy season cannot be entirely relied upon because the extent of crop production cannot be predicted with confidence.
