Potato in warm climates in the Philippines in 1991-1992; 2: selection of clones and tuber families for long storability in diffused light storage

Potato clones and tuber families were evaluated for storability in diffuse light storage for 7 to 9 months. Among 50 advanced clones and cultivars, the best storing clones included 385080.9, 385130.6, 384085.1, 384068.17, and 384091.11. In contrast, the lowland cultivars Berolina and Cosima had very poor storability. Other 60 newly selected clones were also evaluated and best clones were selected. Among 47 tuber families, 37 of them were local tuber families derived from local crosses between selected parents with glandular trichomes and/or long storability; this set had the best storability among tuber families. In an experiment comparing the storability of a set of 14 selected clones with long storability, large tubers (135 g and 75 g) were found to have slightly (2% better storability than smaller tubers in terms of percent weight loss. Although smaller tubers had longer dormancy and lesser number of sprouts than large tubers. Results indicate large variability among clones for storability. Two or three cycles of selection may provide sufficient information to identify best clones to be utilized as parents in breeding or for cultivar release
