Water quality assessment and management of Laguna de Bay: concepts, problems and strategies

The conceptual framework for assessment and management of water quality of Laguna de Bay [Philippines] provides us with a holistic and integrated approach to the resource management of the lake. The concept of water quality has been made clear through distinction between water quality criteria and water quality standards. Assessment of the ambient water quality of Laguna de Bay against its present classification as Class C has revealed that the waters of Laguna de Bay are now below the Class C standard. By and large, the observations on nutrient levels, the highly organic nature of some sediments, high temperature and seasonally low dissolved oxygen values, coupled with the high surface area-to-volume ratio of the lake, all point to the advanced state of eutrophication of Laguna de Bay. One very alarming observation is the very high turbidity of the lake water which may be influenced by heavy siltation from the watershed. The contributing factors and the general deterioration of the water quality of the lake have been discussed together with their ecological impacts
