Citral from Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf (lemongrass) oil

Citral, a major component in lemongrass oil was isolated by a series of fractionation methods from the essential oil of Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf, cultivated in Nagcarlan, Laguna [Philippines]. Gas chromatographic analysis of the citral isolated had a 93.74% purity. Qualitative and quantitative characterization of the citral isolated were performed by comparison with commercial standards. The results indicated that the physico-chemical properties of the citral isolated conformed to the standard specifications set by the International Organization for Standardization. The relative ration of citral a: citral b: offers was found to be 61:33:6 in the citral isolated indicating a richer citral content with a strong lemony odor than the standard. From this study, the lemongrass oil isolated from Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf grown in Laguna, was shown to have a good quality of citral comparable to or even better than the standard citral in commerce
