Variability and heritability of cane yield and sugar content characters in F1 progenies of sugarcane

The results showed that: (1) there was variability in the F1 populations; (2) the variability of number of tillers per stool and stem height in all 15 crosses were greater than those of stem diameter, stem weight, and brix. The occurrence of beneficial variants for number of tillers per stool and stem height was greater than those of stem diameter, stem weight and brix; (3) the differences among means of the F1 populations and their respective parents varied on stem number and stem height depending upon the pollen parents. In general, stem diameter, stem weight and brix gave mean values in the F1 populations which were significantly lower than those of the pollen parents; and (4) based on the male parent, the five characters showed various levels of heritability from zero i.e., in stem weights of Phil 642227, Phil 6607 and Phil 56226 as well as stem diameter of Phil 6607; low heritability for stem diameter of Phil 56226; medium heritability for stem diameter in NCo 310 and Phil 56226 as well as brix of Phil 6607 and Phil 56226; and high heritability in number of tillers per stool and stem height of the four pollen varieties as well as brix of NCo 310
