The application of biotechnology to hop (Humulus lupulus L.) breeding

Micropropagation is well developed as a basic plant biotechnology technique for hop and has been applied in several laboratories, where especially virus free mother plants are multiplied or preserved. Callus induction is possible from several hop tissues and on several media. Callus growth or cell suspensions have been repeatably performed by several research groups, while plantlet regeneration from such undifferentiated tissue has only been reported in a few articles. On the basis of present knowledge, it is possible to hypothesize that bud regeneration from callus is severely affected by viroid infection. Regeneration from protoplast callus and from Agrobacterium transformed callus was unsuccessful because of low ability of hop callus for regeneration. The focus of our present research is the use of somaclonal variation to improve several characters of existing Slovene hop cultivars
