Effect of different grass and maize silage based feeding systems on the milk performance of dairy cows

The effect of different feeding systems on amount and milk quality in the German Spotted dairy cows was studied. Cows were divided into 2 groups. One group was fed by maize silage (12 kg) and fresh mown grass-clover feed (ad libitum). The 2nd group (n=18 heads) fed grass silage (ad libitum) at the same dose of maize silage. As to the consumption of dry matter and nitrogenous substances there were no differences between groups. Dairy cows fed with silage during the whole year consumed significantly less fibre from the forage. In milk yield there were no significant differences between groups, too. Dairy cows fed with silage and grass milked 17.98 kg of milk daily (18.01 FCM), dairy cows fed only with silage milked 17.92 kg of milk (17.66 FCM). There were no differences in the content of milk fat, protein, lactose and urea. A higher amount of somatic cells was found in the milk from dairy cows fed with silage.
