This study deals with the rehabilitation plan intended for the rice areas irrigated by Nanni swamp and the other areas which Corantijn Canal will eventually serve. This report assesses the present data and practices on water use for rice crops in the District of Nickerie in general, the left bank of Van Wouw Canal and Nanni Polder in particular, and covers the whole rice production area in Nickerie. This study has attempted to provide most of the data on agriculture which might be required for the feasibility and pre-feasibility studies on rice polder rehabilitation in Nickerie. The agro-climatic characteristics in relation to the optimum scheduling of rice have been studied; and alternatives are recommended. In addition, an intensive semi-detailed soil survey has been completed; and some interpretative studies are being carried out. The present study also briefly covered the subject of future diversification in relation to the prevailing climatic, soil, water, and some socioeconomic conditions of the District of Nickerie
