Development of dog food using immatured aflatoxin-freed groundnut kernels

Dog food has a potential of acquiring high demand in local and export markets at present and in the future. Generally, dog food is produced from leftover cut-meat, ghee, groundnut cake or soybean cake, corn and tapioca. As much as 20 % of grondnut kernels are immatured kernels which are used only for oil extraction. Development of dog food using immatured kernels will add value to the groundnuts. Formulation of dog food with minimum of 50 % immatured groundnuts was undertaken by linear programming to maximize nutritional quality and minimize the cost. Three formulae were obtained. Chemical evaluation showed that immatured groundnuts could be used with leftover cut-meat. Meat could be replaced by 7.1-9.1 % and ghee 4.2-5.8 % with increasing amount of groundnut, corn and tapioca. Protein content of the product was slightly reduced. More investigation will be made to develop the acceptable products.
