Pigs, 2.5-3 months of age from two small farms, showed signs of severe brownish - black diarrhoea, inappetance, depression, pyrexia (40 -41 dec.celsius) and died. Morbidity rate was 20 % rate and mortality rate was 10 %. The gross lesions were hemorrhagic colitis, hemorrhagic gastritis, edematous swelling of mesenteric lymph nodes and peritonitis. Microscopic examination and special staining examination (Warthin - Starry method) showed a number of spirochaetes organisms ( Treponema spp. ) in the crypts of colonic mucosa.
