Economic analysis of differential effects of modern rice technology adoption on the labor requirement of rice farmers in favorable and unfavorable production environments in Changwat Suphan Buri [Thailand], 1987/88 crop year

Adoption rate of modern rice technology such as MV, fertilizer, pesticide, herbicide, tractors planting technique and threshers was much higher in favorable area than in the flood prone area which was considered as unfavorable area, MV and fertilizer were not adopted. Improved varieties were also used in favorable area. Labor requirement was much higher in favorable area especially with transplanting method while broadcasting and pregerminated broadcasting rice required less labor. Factors affecting demand for labor area planted to MV, irrigation and level of education significantly affected demand for labor while area planted to improved varieties, the use of pesticide and fertilizer had positive effect on demand for labor but not significant. Factors with negative effect on demand for labor were land ownership, experience and farm size. Economic efficiency in rice production in irrigated area had higher net return despite higher cost of production when compared to those in non-irrigated and flood prone area due to higher yield. For rice cultivation in irrigated area, using modern variety with pregerminated broadcasting method had the highest net return of 946 Baht per rai.
