Presents a review of plantain [Musa paradisiaca L. (genome AAB)] and banana [Musa sapientum L. (genome AAA)] diseases in Trinidad and Tobago for the period 1908-1990. Moko disease caused by Pseudomonas solanacearum (E.F. Smith); yellow sigatoka caused by Mycosphaerella musicola (Leach) and the plant-parasitic nematodes Pratylenchus coffeae [zimm.] Filip. and Schuur. Stekh, Radopholus sinulis [Cobb] Thorne and Helicotylenchus multicinctus [Cobb] Golden are the major concerns in banana production. Other problems are Panama disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum spp. cubense [E.F. Smith Synd. and Han] and Cordana leaf spot caused by Cordana musae zimm. Outlines a summary of the research conducted on these diseases. Gives recommendations on technology transfer to farmers, on managing the diseases, plant quarantine and research, necessary components for the rejuvenation of the banana industry.
