Bacterial microflora isolated from carp and catfish fry and their sensitivity to some antibiotics [in Bangladesh]

A total of 135 bacterial isolates of Labeo rohita, Catla catla, Cirrhina mrigala, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Ctenopharyngodon idella, Cyprinus carpio, Puntius gonionotus, Clarias batrachus, C. gariepinus and Mystus cavastus fry and fingerlings were collected from 36 nurseries covering 11 districts of Bangladesh. Out of the total isolates, nonpathogenic or potentially pathogenic, Acrinibas represented 62.47%, Micrococcus 49%, Pseudomonas 25.68% and Edwardsiella tarda 11%. Observed common clinical signs were ulcer, loss of mucus, tail and fin rot, accumulation of fluid in the body cavity, subcutaneous haemorrhage and scale protrusion, causing significant mortality in nursery operation. Antibacterial activity using tetracycline, streptomycin, ampicillin, amoxycillin, nalidixic acid were tested. Most of the isolates were found sensitive to streptomycin and resistant to amoxycillin.
