Direct and residual effects of liming on soil pH and seed cotton yield in an acidic soil of Bangladesh

A field experiment was conducted during 4 consecutive cotton growing seasons from 1985-86 to 1988-89 to study the direct and residual effects of liming on soil pH and seed cotton yield in the acidic Red Brown Terrace Soil of Sreepur, Bangladesh. Liming (with CaO) at 3 rates (2, 4 and 6 t/ha) was done 3 weeks before plantation of 1st crop and succeeding 3 crops were grown without lime keeping the layout unchanged. A blanket fertilizer dose of N120 P120 K120 S20 Zn5 kg/ha was applied in each plot for every crop. Fertilization without lime caused soil acidification lowering the soil pH by 0.20 units in 4 years. Liming at different rates initially rased pH to different levels which were again decreased gradually in the succeeding years. During 1st crop, the seed cotton yields of different liming rates were statistically identical (1.90, 2.05 and 2.10 t/ha), but were remarkably higher than that obtained without lime (only 0.68 t/ha). Such a distinct yield abvantage of liming persisted upto 3rd crop. During 4th crop, plots without lime as well as with lime at different rates produced similar seed cotton yields (0.60, 0.65, 0.65, 0.72 t/ha) indicating cessation of residual effects of liming. It was finally recommended to apply optimum fertilizer dose for each crop with lime 2 t/ha after every 3 years for obtaining higher seed cotton yield in the experimental soil.
