The cuticle of diflubenzuron-, triflumuron-, teflubenzuron-, or chlorfluazuron-treated larvae of Spodoptera littoralis weighed less than that of the control. However, the dry weight of the cuticle of larvae treated with diflubenzuron or triflumuron was comparable; this was also the case in chlorfluazuron- and teflubenzuron-treated larvae. Chitin production was nearly blocked one day after feeding with a BPU; no significant difference in chitin content was observed with the various compounds. BPUs apparently affect the production of all cuticular proteins; electrophoretic assays indicated that similar patterns of protein-content were observed in treated and untreated larvae but at a lower concentration in the treated ones.
