3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl Coenzyme A reductase is the key enzyme of the cholesterol biosynthesis and a prime step for the pharmacological intervention in patients with hypercholesterolemia and ischemic heart disease. During screening of culture it was found, that fungi of the basidiomycetous genus Pleurotus produced the competitive inhibitor of HMG CoA reductase lovastatin in submerged and surface fermentation as well as in the fruiting bodies. The appearance of lovastatin during the life cycle of the commercially cultivated Pleurotus ostreatus sporocarps was followed
