Few 'real' compositional requirements exist - that is, requirements where products are excluded from the market if they do not comply. In most circumstances an economic factor is connected to the protein factor - for example payment to farmers. If the protein factor is changed, the change will be regulated by a change in the economic factor. Apart from nutritional labelling, no labelling requirements are known. Changing the protein definition will not affect the nutritional labelling in the EU and EFTA. In countries where Codex is applied, it will mean a reduction of 5 per cent. Certain claims can be harder to meet. The conclusion is that legislation of course can be changed to take account for an amended Protein Definition, but the author is of the opinion that unless real benefits can be demonstrated, it is not worth the effort.
