Analysis of the Belgian market for oilseeds and their products
1995
Burny, P.
During the last three decades, the Belgian market for oilseeds, oils and meals grew at an exceptionnally high speed, whenever domestic demand, imports or exports are considered. Many factors explain this evolution. Some factors are rather economical, others concern agricultural and export policy. This work successively deals with the Belgian production of oilseeds, the Belgian oilseed industry, the domestic demand of fats, the domestic demand of meals, the statistical description of the evolution of the market for oilseeds and its products in Belgium, in its neighbouring countries and in the European Community, the world market, the prices, the evolution of the Common Agricultural Policy concerning oilseeds, the domestic and export policy of the main exporters, the role of oilseeds in the GATT negociations of the Uruguay Round, the influence of environmental problems on the Belgian market. It finally appears that the demand of oils and meals is mainly linked to the general economic development (level of purchasing power, intensification of animal production techniques, evolution of the food technology, life style changes...). Domestic production and foreign trade are highly determined by policies defined at the international level. In the future, demand and foreign trade will stabilize, because new constraints like the quality of the environment, the physical limit of fat and animal products consumption and economical and political international relations will not allow the continuation of the previous high growth rate.
