Soil analysis and N-fertilizer recommendations for growing sugar beet in southern Germany and Austria

Poor sugar content and juice quality of sugar beets required an adaptation of N fertilizer. After proving of different N fertilizer recommendation systems the electroultrafiltration (EUF) method for soil analysis was introduced in Austria and Germany in 1974 and 1982 respectively. Because of the advantages of the EUF method (all nutrients are analyzed from one extract, high practicability, low cost, site specific recommendations with high accuracy) great acceptance in farmer's practice could be realized. EUF recommendations for 180 000 ha to different crops are given each year. Although N doses were reduced, yields raised and quality was improved. The ecological aspect is remarkable. Activities in EUF research are described.
