Summary of the results with herbicide DPX 66037 applied to sugar beet in Northern Europe [sulfonylurea herbicide]

This paper deals with results of investigations carried out in Denmark, Finland, Great Britain and Sweden with the Du Pont experimental herbicide DPX 66037. DPX sulfonylurea beet herbicide is a completely new compound. The common name is trisulfuron methyl and the trade name by us will probably be "Debut". Trisulfuron methyl acts by inhibition of the acetolactate syntase that stops the growth and kills sensitive plants. In contrast sugar beet shoots and roots rapidly metabolise the chemical. DPX is active against a number of important weeds with the low dosage of 30 grams product per ha. With three postemergence treatments as normal this totally amounts to less than 50 grams a.i. per ha. Sensible plants are: Aethusa cynapium, Crucifera sp., Euphorbia helioscopia, Galeopsis tetrahit, Lamium purpureum, Matricaria sp., Urtica urens and Veronica arvensis.
