In Switzerland, especially in the Alps, the abandonment of traditional grassland farming leads to a continuous increase in the quantity of fallows. In an attempt to estimate the influence of these fallows and of different types of management on biodiversity, the population of Heteroptera of 23 meadows was compared. On an average, the managed meadows have a greater richness in species than the unmanaged ones. The number of individuals and species on fertilised meadows is higher than on unfertilised ones. On the only pasture examined the number of sampled bugs was very poor. Among the fallows, the more recent ones have a greater Heteroptera diversity than the older ones. In managed and unmanaged meadows many specialised Heteroptera species are found, which would justify the protection of these two types of habitats
