[Effect of different levels of rapeseed bran (Brassica napus), on hair production, thyroid tissue and nitrogen balance in angora rabbit]

In the present assay four rations, with increasing amounts of rapeseed (0, 5, 10 and 15%) from different kinds of rape with high levels of glucosinolates, were tested in angora rabbits. The animals were contemporary of the German variety and were situated in a semi-controlled environment. Four groups were made and they were fed for a period of 90 days. Among the groups was evaluated: hair production, with the data obtained from the squill, nitrogen balance with fecal and urinal assays collected during 24 hours. At the end of the period of 90 days, and finally it was performed a thyroid histological analysis from each animal, to evaluate the damage produced by the toxins of the rapeseed. The results obtained showed that to a higher inclusion of rapeseed in the ration, the productive levels decreased, also there was a tendency to decrease the nitrogen retention, reflected in a nitrogen balance each time being lower and starting to appear alterations in a thyroid level, all the above as a result of the effects of the animal metabolism, of the toxic substances present in the rapeseed used here
