Descriptive analyses of intershearing lapse and shearing month on high production angora rabbits

It was studied the effect of intershearing lapse and shearing month over hair production, body weight and first class hair production on 1,159 German origin Angora Rabbits from a private breeder located at Penaflor, Metropolitan Region. 10 to 12 shearings were analyzed for hair production and 5 to 9 for body weight. In this last variable it was estimated too. Intershearing lapse of 86 to 90 days obtained the highest gross-margin, however the daily increase of total hair reached its maximum level at 66 days (2.63 g/day) and the whole production was reached at 121 days (278.1 g). This was due to the fact that the level of hair growth diminished slightly at the beginning, but considerably afterwards. On the other hand, the first class hair production increases slowly until 66 days (1.13 g a/day) reaching its maximum level between 87 and 98 days (1.79 g a/day). With intershearing lapses too long (more than 116 days) the yields diminish significantly (1.57 g a/day). The highest production of total hair was reached in winter (June, July, August) and the lowest in the summer months (December, January, February, March). Shorthair production and more than 5 cm hair were however different. First class hair production reached its maximum level in April, beginning to decrease until September. Lower class hair obtained the highest yield in June, July and August. The largest body weight was obtained in march. Thereafter it began to diminish 8.1% until October-November
