Hessian fly (HF), Mayetiola destructor (Say) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) biotype M, which according to its definition cannot live on wheat, Triticum aestivum L. em Thell., cultivars with the H6 gene for resistance (Gallun, 1977), was selected through five generations, however, on wheat cultivars with this gene, and became capable of stunting these cultivars, After five generations of selection on "Fillmore" (H6) or "Auburn" (H6), the flies increased virulence on "Ella" (H9) from 1.1% susceptibility before selection to 58.4 and 61.7% stunting, respectively, Thus, the HF can overcome new genes for plant resistance in wheat, supporting pyramiding genes in a wheat cultivar over sequential release of single resistance genes for obtaining durable resistance to this pest
