This paper gives the results of the trial carried out with sows on Sootaga State Farm. The changes on sows weight, backfat depth, chest and ham measurement during their pregnancy according to the feeding level of the sows were studied in the trial. As the result of this trial it was established that the all Union standards do not guarantee the desirable weight of sows during pregnancy. Sows gain in their extrauterine weight, backfat depth, chest and ham measurement mainly during the first and second month of the pregnancy. In this period the lean sows need more metabolizable energy and nutrients than it is envisaged by the all Union standards. The rations for the pregnant sows must be calculated according to the partial requirements. At the end of pregnancy the sows do not need the feed above the requirements for maintenance and foetal growth. The application of partical requirements enables to economize in comparison to all Union standards 30...38 kg of concentrates by feeding sows of normal condition and 60...78 kg of concentrates by feeding of lean sows.
