Twelve genotypes of tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter] grown under different agroecological conditions of Ethiopia and five varieties of tef grown in a glasshouse at Wye College (Britain) were analysed for their iron content. This investigation confirmed the earlier reports that data on the analysis of tef suffered from soil and species contamination. On the other hand, extensive acid washing of samples to remove contaminants is found to be unsuitable. For the cleaning purposes of the seeds, washing with deionized water seems to be sufficient. This study also revealed the fact that genetic and environmental factors influence the iron content of tef.
