The living populations of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria, the properties of seven strains of these bacteria and the litter proteins of plant species Trifolium purpureum, Dichanthium ischaemum, Chrysopogon gryllus and Festuca ovina during their decomposition were studied for 2 years. At the end of each season the population of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria per unit mass of dry plant litter were enumerated. These numbers were always more on leaves than on stems of plant species. It was found that the isolated strains attacked starch, arginine, casein and cellulose differently. It was found that proteins (%) were more in leaves than in stems of plant litter of four plant species. Also, proteins (%) were increased during plant litter decomposition of four plant species examined
