Agricultural production in Hungary struggles despite results internationally acknowledged with growing economic problems since the second half of the 80ies, parallel with this tensions in agricultural employment also increasingly appear. Problems of employment came to light earlier, but were started to control before other sectors and sometimes with rather unconventional methods, by modernizing organization, expanding activities and setting up manyfold small enterprises. Temporarily tensions of agricultural and rural employment were successfully reduced by establshing personal interestedness and rationally sharing activities between large and small scale production. Outflow labor considerably accelerated from the end of the 80ies and as a result of growing agricultural unemployment the sector may become, especially in some regions, a prominent factor of employment crisis. The paper is a survey of the changing agricultural labor situation, qualitative and quantitive characteristics, income situation, social problems of the agrarian population and tensions appearing in course of the transformation of the sector, including regional scope and impact of the problem
