Growth responses of rice, corn and barley plants to monomer and polymer A1 ions in culture solution were investigated, and the toxicity of each ion species was evaluated. 1) The ferron method clarified that there were differences in the concentration of A1 ion species between the monomer A1 treatment and the polymer A1 treatment. 2) the growth of all plants decreased with both monomer and polymer A1 treatment and the decrease was smaller in rice than in corn and barley. The stronger toxicity of monomer A1 ions than polymer A1 ions was found in the root growth of rice and the shoot growth of barley. 3) The A1 content in roots increased with the A1 treatments, and it was higher in the monomer A1 treatment than in the polymer A1 treatment in rice. On the contrary, in corn and barley the A1 content was higher in the polymer A1 treatment than in the monomer A1 treatment, which was attributed to the great damage of the roots by toxic A1 ions. It was considered from these results that monomer A1 ions were a little more toxic than polymer A1 ions to plant growth
