To be maintained at low temperature, bulbs of Lilium x elegans Thunb. were placed in a chamber made of 10cm thick polystyrene panels, and stored in snow from 19 December 1988 to 25 April 1989. The temperature varied from -0.2 to 1 degrees C during storage. Bulbs planted on 13 December 1988 as a control sprouted in early April and flowered from early to middle June. However, those planted on 25 April 1989 after storage sprouted in middle May and flowered from early to middle July. In a previous study, storage was found to cause a slight decrease in stem length and node number of Connecticut King. In this study, it was noted that the storage caused decease in stem length and weight, with no effect on node number in Connecticut King and 2 other varieties whose flower-buds appeared shortly after sprouting. It was considered that this was due to the small difference in growing temperature between the control and the stored bulbs
