Integrated pest management for sweetpotato weevil: monitoring of weevil population and introduction of control measures in San Felipe, Zambales [Philippines]

The second year of an effort to introduce a package of IPM for sweetpotato weevil in Zambales Province [Philippines] to prevent an anticipated resurgence of the pest after the volcano eruption is reported in this paper. Comparison of pheromone trap counts between 1993 and 1994 reveals that weevil population has declined in Barangay Maloma but increased in Balincaguing. Stem damage was detected in Balincaguing but not in Maloma. In both locations, root damage was not detected and there seems to be no effect on sweetpotato productivity. The perception that weevil has ceased to be a problem probably gave the farmers sense of security and explains their reluctance to adopt the full IPM package recommended. Nevertheless, the IPM information campaign can be considered a success. If weevil becomes a problem again, the farmers will know how to deal with it
