Residues of agrochemical use in rice fields draining into the Laguna de Bay [Philippines]

Agrochemical residues from ricefields move with drainage water into receiving bodies of water, the Laguna de Bay, a large freshwater lake, receives drainage water from 33,400 ha of surrounding ricefields. The concentrations of agrochemicals residues in drainage water from ricefields that drains into the Laguna de Bay were determined. Residues were detected in both irrigation and drainage waters. Pesticide residue concentrations in drainage water were higher compared to concentration in irrigation water, suggesting that residues from applied pesticide in ricefields were carried by runoff water. But nitrogen residue concentrations in drainage water were lower compared to concentration in irrigation water, indicating that the residues were retained in ricefields. Ricefields contributed to lake water toxicity but do not significantly contribute to lake eutrophication
