Time of incorporation of Gliricidia sepium (Madre de cacao) leaves in relation to nitrogen efficiency on lowland rainfed rice under Castilla clay soil

Field experiments were conducted at Ipil Experiment Station in Zamboanga del Sur [Philippines] to evaluate the effect of time of application of Gliricidia leaves and urea fertilization on nitrogen efficiency of lowland rainfed rice under Castilla clay soil and to analyze the performance of lowland rainfed rice using Gliricidia loopings as organic fertilizer. Grain yield of urea treated plants at 60 kg N/ha was significantly the highest yielder for first cropping experiment. In the second cropping, they were comparable to plants fertilized with gliricidia leaves at seven days before transplanting. Plant tiller development and panicle count per hill of rice plants fertilized with Gliricidia leaves at seven and zero days before transplanting were comparable to those fertilized with urea (60 kg N/ha) for first and second season experiments. Application of Gliricidia leaves at various time of incorporation and urea fertilization have no significant effect on plant height, panicle length and on some soil chemical properties (soil pH, organic matter, available phosphorus, and excheangeable potassium) for two seasons. The return on investment of rice plant fertilized with Gliricidia leaves at fourteen to zero days before transplanting showed an optimum profitability which ranges from 3.02 to 3.10 and 1.04 to 1.51 for first and second season experiments which were comparable to that of urea at 60 kg N/ha
