dela Cruz, L.C. (SMP-PMPC Inc., Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija (Philippines))
This study determined the profitability of the fisheries in the Pantabangan Reservoir. Culture practices and management of the fisheries in the area were also discussed. Information such as socio-economic characteristics of the fishermen and tilapia cage farmers, costs and returns, and problems faced by the fishermen and cage farmers are presented. On the average, people fish for 5.23 hr/day for a maximum of 149 d/yr. Average annual fish catch is 275.26 kg and average annual per capita income for those who fish in the reservoir is about P7,456.49. Cultural and management practices for floating net cages (FNC) are similar among all farmers. Standard recommendations for stocking, feeding, management, and cage unit sizes are generally followed by the farmers in the area. The average production per cage cycle was slightly over 287 kg/cage/cycle and net cash farm income was P639.32. The major problems identified include shortage of fingerlings, limited market, limited management expertise, poaching, and lack of extension services. On the other hand, catch depletion is the major problem of those who fish in the reservoir
