Integrated N management in irrigated lowland rice

Results showed that N content, on a dry-weight basis was 1.9 percent for Sesbania aculeata, 1.6 percent for Azolla compost, 1.5 percent for S. rostrata, 1.3 percent for FYM, and 1.2 percent for water hyacinth compost. Grain yield in different integrated N application schedules was comparable with that of the conventional 3-way split application of PU [prilled urea] and USG treatments during the first 4 yr of the study. During the fifth year, grain yield was significantly lower in the 3-way split of PU compared with the other treatments. Yield declined over time in all the treatments. The decline was, in general, greater in the conventional 3-way split of PU than in the integrated N application schedules and USG treatment in all years except 1990, when it was similar across treatments. Organic and inorganic fertilizer applied in equal proportions can be used to realized higher and sustained yield in irrigated lowland rice
