The study was the continuation of a previous research which found out that procurement of water was the hardest household responsibility for women. By providing water pumps on the existing well for a group of families, the project helps them to share clean water for domestic purposes. The study conducted in 1993-1994, involved four villages in Yogyakarta province. Results showed that there were unequal responsibilities in household activities related to water resources and environmental management. Community awareness about water quality and environment is still low. However, an equal sharing between man and woman is shown in health consciousness and responsibilities even though a basic health activity related to water resources training is still needed. Income-generating efforts through home garden horticulture and fishery are well accepted by both women and men in the local community
