Effect of maize, beans and potato intercropping on yield and economic benefit

Trials on this study were carried out in 1989 and 1990 in Kalam valley (Swat). The objective of this study was to find out the effect of intercropping of maize and beans individually on potato yield and income of farmers. During summer 1989, strip cropping of potato, maize and beans were tested ten different combinations in the field to compare with mix cropping (Farmer practice) and potato alone as check. Result showed that all the strip combinations gave lower yield and return as compared to potato alone (43.0 t/ha) followed by intercropping. In 1990 mix cropping (instead of strip cropping) of maize, beans and potato were tested. A mix of 5, 15 and 60 per cent maize and beans on the basis of number of plants per unit area, keeping potato plants constant in each treatment. These combinations were compared with potato alone (check). A significant decrease at 5% mix. Net benefit was highest with potato alone. However it was not significantly higher upto 15% maize in case of maize and 5% in beans. Intercropping was found more suitable for low yielding area and remote valleys of Pakistan
