Regulation of flowering and timing of harvest in gladiolus (Gladiolus grandiflorus)

Field experiments showed that removal of the corm tunic before planting, foliar spray of urea, gibberrelic acid at 500 and 1000 ppm applied after initiation and shading of the plants after flower initiation accelerated the harvest date of 'White Friendship' gladiolus. The latter, however, resulted in short-spiked inflorescence and less florets, while there was no effect on other floral parameters. Correspondence Analysis provided more information on what practices or factors are associated with hitting the target harvest days for November 1st holidays. These are early planting (August 15-20), covering corms after planting, side-dressing with a mixture of urea and complete fertilizers, frequent weeding and more than 23 years of experience in growing gladiolus. Side-dressing urea in Victory gladiolus and 100-200 ppm BA sprayed to the leaves at flower emergence delayed harvesting. Night lighting was shown by field experiment to have no effect and Correspondence Analysis confirmed such effect. Planting medium to large corms resulted in long spikes with more florets. Planting corms with longer sprouts (2 cm) also gave long-spiked gladiolus but floret number was not affected. Long stalked plants were obtained when the tunic was removed but plants were dwarfed when the plants were sprayed with 10 percent sucrose or 100-1000 ppm Ethrel either after flower initiation or at flower emergence
