Incidence and severity of brown spot (Helminthosporium oryzae) and other major diseases of rice in Zamboanga City [Philippines]

A study on brown spot [BS] disease was conducted to determine its incidence and severity in the Western and Eastern Coasts of Zamboanga [Philippines]. Results revealed that BS occurred in all rice fields in Zamboanga City. Severity of infection ranges from 25-75 percent and above. Western Coast areas were severely infected during dry season. Varieties used by farmers were susceptible to BS at all stages of growth. Other diseases of major importance were cercospora leafspot (Cercospora oryzae) Rhizoctonia Leaf Blight (Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn), False Smut (Ustilaginoidea virens) and "yellow spot" of unknown agent and Tungro
