Analysis of genotype x enviroment interaction for yield in irrigated lowland rice

In the combined analysis of variance over environment, no significant difference was found among genotypes of irrigated lowland rice in all four maturity groups. Genotype x environment interaction was not large but highly significant for all four groups, implying re-ranking was unlikely and therefore stability of genotypes was expected. The data were subjected to further analysis to estimate adaptability and stability parameters, and compare mean performance of genotypes, following the method of Eberhart and Russell (1966). Entry PR23383-15 from Group 1 was found to be unstable on the basis of both regression coefficient and deviation from regression parameters. On the basis of mean performance, adaptability and stability, Group 1 entry IR56450-4-2-2 was better than the other test entries but equal to the check IR72. Also, Group 4 entry PR23362-21, on similar basis, was found to be better than the other test entries but was equal to the check IR4. The combined analysis of variance over seasons and locations yielded variance components that were used in the computation of the standard errors of genotype means. Against the present practice of the NCT, the results appeared to suggest that the present method of resource allocation should continue until sufficient information becomes available to warrant a change. The range of satisfactory but speculative optimum resource combination of replication-season-location should be, Group 1: 4, 2-6, 7-10; Group 2: 4, 2-6, 10-12; Group 3: 3-4, 4-6, 4-10; and Group 4: 3, 3-6, 4-8
