Land use simulation model for planning the upper Cimanuk watershed in West Java, Indonesia

A land use simulation model consisting of soil erosion, hydrologic, production function and economic submodels was developed to determine the optimum land use of Cikamiri and Cipanday Miniwatersheds in the uppermost part of Cimanuk Watershed. The optimum land use of the two miniwatersheds was LUT [land utilization type] alternative-6. This had a weighted average of soil erosion rates for Cikamiri Miniwatershed for about 18.53 tons/ha/year or equivalent to 0.14 of the present land use. Cipanday, on the other hand, had 21.99 tons/ha/year or equivalent to 0.16 of the present land use. These erosion rates were lower than the weighted average tolerable soil loss for Cikamiri (83.09 tons/ha/year) and Cipanday (71.45 tons/ha/year). The Qmax/Qmin for Cikamiri and Cipanday was 34.7:1 and 50.8:1, respectively. These values were equivalent to 0.92 and 0.90 respectively, of the present land use; B/C ratios for Cikamiri and Cipanday were 2.53 and 2.25 or equivalent to 1.70 and 1.76, respectively, of the present land use. NPV, on the other hand, was Rp 12,263.953 or equivalent to 3.77 of the present land use for Cikamiri; Rp 11,341,902 or 3.96 of the present land use for Cipanday. The present carrying capacity in terms of expected food production in Cikamiri and Cipanday Miniwatersheds was 0.96 and 1.01, respectively, compared to the population demand. However, through the establishment of the selected optimum land use including the soil conservation program, the study area's carrying capacity at the 10th year of implementation (year 2003) would increase to 173 and 158 percent for Cikamiri and Cipanday, respectively
